San Mateo Seeks E-Recording

The San Mateo Clerk-Recorder's Office is ready to accept electronically recorded documents, but first must get approval from the Secretary of State's Office on the electronic Notary seal.

The pilot program, which is similar to other e-recording pilot programs around the country, is already being used with the County Tax Collector and the State Franchise Tax Board, said Deputy County Clerk-Recorder Theresa Rabe.

Notaries Support National ID

Many California Notaries support the concept of a national identification card, saying it would help them with their duties and improve security following the September 11th terrorists attacks.

Past proposals for a national ID have met strong resistance from privacy advocates concerned about government misuse or unauthorized access to a user's personal information.

National license standards would be a major step toward eliminating existing problems, said Barry Goleman, a former Department of Motor Vehicles senior manager who currently works with American Management Systems in Sacramento.
